Why is a Smile So Important?

“A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.” – Phyllis Diller

At Montini Orthodontics, our mission is simple: To Make People Smile. So, you might ask, why is a smile so important? Smiling is a very natural response that is often involuntary, but it can also be a conscious choice you make.

Each person has a unique smile that is like a window into their personality. Not surprisingly, there are a number of reasons why you should make it a point to smile every day.

Smiling Elevates Our Mood

Research has shown that the simple act of smiling can make you feel happy, even when you are not. If you’re having one of those days where everything seems to be going wrong, try putting on a smile. It’s very likely that your mood will change for the better because smiling actually triggers brain activity with a release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Give it a try next time you are feeling down or upset.

Smiling is Contagious

Smiling is also said to be contagious so those around you will also be happier and feel better when they see you smile. We’ve all heard the expression that a smile can lighten up a room. Since smiling is a natural response that is often unconscious and automatic, people have a habit of mimicking others when they are smiling. Frowning can act in a similar way by producing a negative reaction, so choose to smile and watch for all the smiles you get in return.

Smiling Makes Us More Attractive

Think about it — There’s a reason why we always ask people to smile in photos. It’s because people look more attractive when they are smiling, right? By nature, we are drawn to people who smile because there’s a real physical attraction link to the act of smiling. Since smiling can even lead to laughter, why not join in the fun?

At Montini Orthodontics, our highly-trained and courteous team is an integral part of your treatment. We take pride in making people feel like family, not just another clinical case, from the time they enter our office. Let all of us be the reason you smile today! Why? Because you’re worth it!
